My stupid scanner thinks it knows how my picture is supposed to look and where to cut it off even though I've tried it a million different ways. Hewlett-Packard scanners are complete shit... this is the second I've owned and they continually let me down.
Anybody have a good idea for a replacement? I need one that will purr like a kitten and roar like a lion and hopefully make some good coffee...

It sounds like what sucks about your scanner is the software. Are you using software that came bundled with the scanner, or some other graphics program? The Import function in Ilustrator and Photoshop usually gives you total control over your scans.
I have an Epson scanner and I like it pretty well, especially that it can scan negatives. I forget the model though, it's some four digit number, not that that helps. But I think what that other person said is probably true too. I use my computer's Image Capture function to scan and it works reaaaal goooood but you can also scan directly into Photoshop.
